Who we are

A measured desk for a hard problem

The International Health Journal is an editorial review desk for global health in low-resource settings. We exist because the systems that deliver care — the cold chain, the diagnostic, the water point, the outbreak response — fail at their joints, and field teams choosing how to fix those joints deserve an honest, independent review of the equipment and methods on offer.

We are an educational publication. Nothing we publish is medical advice, and nothing we conclude is for sale. Our remit is the practical reality of delivering health where delivery is hardest, and our discipline is to read the published evidence first, then test it against the field.

The journal is organised into four standing desks and governed by a documented set of editorial standards, a peer-review policy and a clear governance structure. This section explains how all of that fits together.

Editorial independence

Independent by design, not by accident

The journal accepts no payment to feature a product and carries no advertising that shapes coverage. What we review and what we conclude is decided on the evidence by the editorial desk.

That independence is enforced structurally through our publication ethics and governance — not merely promised. Field teams spend scarce budgets on our reading of the evidence; the least we owe them is a review with no stake in the outcome.

Our values in practice

What guides the desk

Four commitments shape every decision we make, from what we choose to review to how we handle an error after publication.

  1. 01Step

    Evidence first

We read the literature and the field-trial data before we form a view, and we state plainly where the evidence is thin.

  2. 02Step

    Honest framing

We never claim credentials, metrics or indexing we have not earned. 'Peer-reviewed in spirit' means exactly what it says.

  3. 03Step

    Plain language

We write for the people who deploy the equipment, not for a specialist audience — clarity over cleverness.

  4. 04Step

    Open correction

When we are wrong, we say so openly and quickly, and we record it in the public corrections log.

Our readers

Who the journal serves

Our readership is the people who keep health delivery working under pressure: programme managers, logisticians, procurement officers, clinicians and public-health workers in settings where the cold chain is fragile and the laboratory is far away.

We also welcome readers from research, donor organisations and ministries of health who need an independent reading of field equipment. Whoever you are, our aims and scope set out what you can and cannot expect from us — and our commitment to equity shapes whose needs we keep in view.

Accountability

How we hold ourselves to account

Independence is only credible if it is enforceable. The journal documents its commitments and submits to them publicly. Our editorial standards define what every piece must satisfy; our peer-review policy describes how a second reader challenges each review; our publication ethics set out conflict-of-interest rules; and our corrections and retractions policy governs what happens when we get something wrong.

We also publish our open-access policy and contributor guidelines so that readers and contributors alike know exactly how the journal operates. None of this is decoration — it is the machinery that makes the journal trustworthy. If something here does not match your experience of our work, we want to hear about it via the editorial desk.

Queries to the desk

05 entries on file
Q1.Is the journal a registered academic publication?

We are an independent editorial review desk. We are honest that we do not hold a formal ISSN, impact factor or indexing we have not earned. What we offer is disciplined, independent review described fully in our peer-review policy.

Q2.Who funds the journal?

The journal is educational and non-commercial. No advertiser or manufacturer shapes our coverage. Our governance and publication ethics pages document how independence is protected.

Q3.Why don't you name your board members?

We describe the editorial board by role and responsibility rather than inventing named individuals. We would rather be transparent about structure than present credentials we cannot stand behind. See the editorial board page.

Q4.How do I get in touch?

The contact page reaches the editorial desk directly. We read field reports, topic suggestions and corrections from people working in low-resource settings.

Q5.Can I republish your work?

Our content is open-access by default. The terms are set out in our open-access policy; in short, we want useful field knowledge to travel.
